Las Vegas Academy of the Arts Star Graduate, Airius Fa’afiu, uses her artistic talents to benefit Las Vegas with community service and starting her own business. As a 2D design major, Airius uses a combination of media in my art. She plans to attend UNLV Honors College in the fall, majoring in Biological Sciences. I am pleased to recommend Isaac Garcia as CSN East High School’s Star Grad. I have only known this student for a few months as the previous counselor left in September. However, in the short time Isaac has distinguished himself at the College of Southern Nevada High School. Clark County School District (CCSD) Superintendent Dr. Jesus F. Jara announced today the appointment of long-time educator and current CCSD Region 3 Superintendent Dr. Karla Loria as the Chief Academic Officer after a search process.  Dr. Loria, a native of Costa Rica, spent her first year at CCSD leading educators in the Southeast portion of the District. The Clark County School District’s (CCSD) Reopening Our Schools Working Group convened for the first time this week to set the groundwork. The working group will provide input that will inform CCSD’s plan for the reopening of schools in August 2020. The guiding principles of the working group include: ● Ensuring the safety and well-being of all students and employees. ● Promoting equity and accessibility to learning for all students. ● Providing instructional delivery systems to meet the needs of all students. ● Fostering positive relationships and interactions. Agenda Item 5.01 – Council of the Great City Schools review of special education The Clark County School District (CCSD) Board of School Trustees received a report on the findings of the Council of the Great City Schools (CGCS) review of special education services in CCSD. In the report, the CGCS provided observations that outline areas of strength, opportunities for improvement, and recommendations. The CGCS report noted that CCSD faces many challenges related to Nevada’s current per-pupil funding level of $9,185 per pupil which is well below the nation’s average of $12,756. During her Junior year, Annabella’s family experienced an extreme tragedy. Her father took his own life in October 2019. Three months later, her mother also passed away. She and her four siblings struggled to cope with the enormous grief and loss of their parents while also attempting to navigate all of the legalities and financial burdens that came with it. As a student, somehow, Annabella continued to excel in our rigorous dual credit program. She has also been a devoted member of our Student Council. The Clark County School District (CCSD) has added an additional route to the Wi-Fi bus schedule announced earlier this month. Along with the 14th Wi-Fi bus route, CCSD has relocated some of the stops on existing routes to better serve students throughout Clark County. The changes will take effect on Thursday, May 14, 2020. First-generation college-bound Latina Denises Justo-Soriano will graduate from Rancho High School near the top of her class. She credits her accomplishments to hard work, dedication, and an encouraging family. Denises embodies Rancho’s philosophy of taking advantage of opportunities and experiences. She’s done this throughout her academic career, enrolling at two of the district’s nationally certified magnet programs, first at Cashman Middle School and then at Rancho High School. Martina DuBray will graduate from Indian Springs High School this spring as the ultimate Thunderbird. As a K-12 school, Indian Springs has had the honor of having Martina attend consecutively from kindergarten all the way through her high school graduation. But not only has she attended the entire time, she has excelled every step of the way. Martina will graduate as the Class of 2020 Valedictorian with a GPA of 4.289.
