The Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO) today announced that Juliana Urtubey, an elementary school special education teacher, is the 2021 National Teacher of the Year. Urtubey, an educator for 11 years, teaches at Kermit R. Booker, Sr. Innovative Elementary School in Las Vegas, where she serves as a co-teacher in pre-kindergarten through fifth-grade special education settings and as an instructional strategist developing supports to meet students’ differing academic, social-emotional, and behavioral needs. Known as “Ms. Earth” for her efforts to beautify schools and unify the community through murals and gardens, Urtubey has helped raise funds for garden programs at two Las Vegas schools. In…

Vegas PBS will air a special broadcast of the 2021 Heart of Education Awards made possible by The Rogers Foundation. With the traditional red-carpet ceremony at The Smith Center sidelined due to social distancing, the celebration will air on Sunday, May 23 at 8 p.m. on Vegas PBS Channel 10.1. When COVID-19 cancelled their school play, Cox partnered with Thurman White Academy of the Performing Arts and Academy Award winning director Patrick Osborne to reimagine the play as an animated short, voiced and performed by the students named “Drawn Closer.” Using mobile motion capture technology, the students of Thurman White were able to perform together again – all from the safety of their own homes. This film was produced by Cox and ad agency 180LA for The Connections Project – a series of initiatives directed at providing human connection where it’s needed most. The College of Southern Nevada High School’s East campus is proud to recognize Mariafernanda Lopez-Lopez as our star graduate. She currently has a 4.065 Weighted GPA and is looking forward to continuing college in the fall. Bogdan Degeratu is enrolled in the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme at Valley High School and is this year’s Valedictorian Candidate. Bogdan has been involved in many different facets of high school, academics, and community service; facts that can be seen through his transcripts and resume.
