The Clark County School District Police Department (CCSDPD) has received four grants from the Nevada Department of Public Safety, Office of Traffic Safety (NVOTS). Estes M. McDoniel was born on April 3, 1919, in Arkansas and went to school in Batesville. He received his Bachelor of Science degree in education from the University of Arkansas where he also received two letters in varsity football and three letters in varsity track. Mr. McDoniel also earned a Master of Education degree at Utah State University. He began his teaching career in Arkansas for a short while before moving to Henderson, Nevada in 1943 where he would soon become the first football coach at Basic High School. Liliam Lujan Hickey was an outstanding member of the Hispanic community who always had the desire to serve her community and who promoted educational programs throughout Nevada.  Hickey was born in Havana, Cuba in 1932. In 1964 her husband had the opportunity to work in a casino in the fast-expanding City of Las Vegas, so they made the big move.  Hickey established Career Day for high school students, which over the years awarded over $300,000 in scholarships to Hispanic students. The Clark County School District (CCSD) will observe the Week of Respect during the first week of October, beginning Monday, Oct. 2 through Friday, Oct. 6. Schools across the District will participate in activities all week to emphasize a safe and respectful learning environment.  CCSD students and staff are encouraged to “Get Your Blue On” on Friday, Oct. 6 by wearing blue. Tony Alamo was born June 4, 1941 in Isabela de Sagua, Cuba before arriving in Miami in 1961.   In 1963, he married his wife Maria and moved to Nevada in 1974, where he became a U.S. citizen. Raul P. Elizondo, Jr. was born on July 21, 1967, in Mesa, Arizona. He was raised in Henderson, Nevada and attended Basic High School, where he was a member of the 1984 State Championship wrestling team. His mother, Ann, was a teacher at the Clark County School District. Officer Elizondo became a North Las Vegas police officer on March 13, 1992, and was recognized for his dedicated service within two years by the Chief of Police. He received the highest award possible from the North Las Vegas Police Association and was honored as the 1994 Police Office of the Year. …

In an effort to keep our southern Nevada community informed about the status of negotiations with CCEA, the local teachers union, the following is the latest update between the parties. On Friday, the Clark County School District (CCSD) submitted its latest offer to the Clark County Education Association (CCEA). This offer included a first-year salary increase of 9% across the board, and our year two offer was increased to 3.3%. Arturo B. Cambeiro was born on April 19, 1932, in Havana, Cuba, where he received a bachelor’s degree in science and architecture. When he was 29 years old, Mr. Cambeiro and his family immigrated to the United States. They did not have very much and did not know the language. The Cambeiro family lived in Miami and Los Angeles before landing in Las Vegas, where Mr. Cambeiro became Nevada’s first licensed Hispanic architect.
