The Clark County School District Transportation Department will host a bus driver job fair Saturday, April 6, 8 a.m. – noon, at the Richard C. White Transportation Center, 4499 S. Arville St., Las Vegas. In an effort to reduce the shortage that is being experienced locally as well as nationally, applicants can apply onsite, and will have the opportunity to have questions answered and speak with current drivers about what duties are included as part of the job. Taylor Hickman is the Star Graduate from Indian Springs High School. Taylor has attended Indian Springs schools from kindergarten through his senior year of high school. He has been recognized for outstanding attendance during 10 of his 13 years in school, and he has had perfect attendance four different times. Taylor is an outstanding student, citizen and athlete. He has participated in numerous extracurricular activities, including basketball, baseball, football, band, theater and student council. The Clark County School District is holding a Student Legislative Working Group on April 10 at Vegas PBS, from 3:30 – 5 p.m. Any CCSD high school student who is interested in sharing their voice in this current legislative session is encouraged to participate. Sierra Vista High School would like to nominate Angel Garcia as our Star Graduate. When Angel arrived as a freshman, he was extremely distant and would not say a word to anyone. His demeanor came across as a student who was angry and disrespectful to adults. As our staff learned more about Angel, and worked with him to overcome this demeanor, we learned that Angel had experienced trauma as a young boy, and he was actually a loving and kind young man. The Board of School Trustees recently unanimously approved the hiring of David P. McKinnis as the District’s new Chief of Facilities. McKinnis has extensive experience managing facilities at properties on the Strip, currently serving as the Vice President of Property Operations at Bellagio Hotel and Casino, a world-class iconic property. Dr. Jara said McKinnis will lead CCSD’s increased focus on ensuring that District facilities are properly maintained, while also overseeing construction, expansion and renovation of facilities. Cimarron-Memorial High School’s Highrollers, Team 987, won the 2019 FIRST Nevada Robotics Las Vegas Regional competition. The Highrollers were in first place with the only perfect record at the end of qualifying matches.  They served as the Alliance Team Captain and selected Team 842 from Phoenix and Team 7425 (Green Valley High School Robotics) from Las Vegas as team members. Star Graduate Madhavi Mirpuri came and toured Valley High School over the summer with her family, she was trying to decide on which International Baccalaureate school in Las Vegas to attend. Madhavi’s dream is to attend the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, so her family moved from India to Las Vegas to make this a reality for her. Madhavi attended an IB school in India. She selected Valley High School because of its legacy of being the most established IB program in Nevada with 40 years of experience. Dell Technologies, in a report that generated a lot of public attention, estimated that 85 percent of the jobs that will exist in 2030 have yet to be invented. Not only is this forecast a challenge for current employers and those in the workforce, but it also poses a challenge for educators and parents as they prepare our children for what is ahead. A major roadblock to academic success is chronic absenteeism. In Clark County, the chronic absenteeism rate can range from almost 13 percent to as high as 34 percent, depending on grade level. Students must attend school daily to be successful. Attendance affects learning, language acquisition, grades, test scores, and graduation. CCSD’s newly adopted five-year strategic plan – Focus: 2024 – outlines a number of strategies to increase student attendance.
