The Family and Community Engagement Services (FACES) Department reached over 100,000 family members during the 2018-19 school year through the University of Family Learning (UFL). FACES works hard to support and leverage all stakeholders with increasing student achievement and attendance. The UFL offers family members an opportunity to access bilingual (and free of charge) workshops, resources, and information focused on increasing both family and student success. Workshops are held at school sites, the 10 FACES Family Engagement Centers, libraries, recreation centers, and other sites throughout the community. Clark County School District (CCSD) Superintendent Dr. Jesus F. Jara has announced the hiring of Nadine Jones as the CCSD’s new Chief Human Resources Officer. Similar to many districts around the nation, CCSD is working to fill teacher vacancies amid a national teacher shortage. “Our teachers and those who influence the lives of our students each day are our biggest asset,” said Jara. “We must hire only the best and work to retain them here in Clark County.” Jones currently serves as the Vice President of Human Resources for MGM Grand Las Vegas. Jara expressed his appreciation for the final version of Senate Bill 543, which modernizes Nevada’s education funding formula for the first time in 52 years, and will provide long overdue and badly needed funding for some of the state’s neediest students. CCSD can provide employees an average 2 percent seniority increase plus a 3 percent cost of living increase with the passage of Senate Bill 551, Assembly Bill 309 and the other supplemental funding to the K-12 budget supported by Governor Sisolak, Speaker Frierson, Majority Leader Cannizzaro and legislators. A revised version of SB 551 introduced June 2 allocates an additional $53 million over the biennium. This, combined with AB 309, which gives CCSD $13 million in flexible funding, plus the opportunity for additional funds through an optional county sales tax, means CCSD can provide the proposed raises. “Nothing is more…

May 24, 2019 After a report that that legislative leaders have worked to free up $250 million in funds, we want to thank the Governor and Legislative leadership for making difficult decisions. We also want to thank them for having ongoing conversations with us and other leaders in education, and encourage them to utilize these these funds to invest in Nevada’s children. The total expenditure per student in the Clark County School District (CCSD) is the lowest of all of the 74 school districts in the Council of Great City Schools. Clark High School student Angela Hernandez, a graduating senior, won a Chevrolet Sonic, courtesy of Findlay Chevrolet, during the 13th annual “Drive for Excellence” celebration at Wet’n’ Wild Las Vegas on May 22, 2019. More than 760 high school seniors qualified for the grand prize by maintaining a weighted grade point average of 3.7 or higher and an attendance record of zero unexcused or unverified absences. In addition to the new car, students also won scholarships, Chromebooks and a number of prizes donated by community partners.
