In a surprise announcement held during a school assembly on Oct. 24, the Milken Family Foundation presented the Milken Educator Award to Sunrise Mountain High School teacher Ben Nguyen, an Ivy League graduate. The Milken Educator Awards, often referred to as the “Oscars of Teaching,” provide recognition and financial awards of $25,000 each to educators across the nation who are furthering excellence in education. Clark County School District (CCSD) Superintendent Dr. Jesus F. Jara honored 63 schools as part of the 2019-20 Superintendent’s Honor Roll, the second class of the program created to honor CCSD’s top-performing schools. The distinguished schools include 44 five-star rated schools, two National Blue Ribbon Schools and 19 Gold Star schools, which are high-performing schools that serve a high percentage of students living in poverty. The Clark County School District’s (CCSD) bus safety team recognized a group of elementary students as “star” bus riders. The students received a brief review of the safest way to get on and off the bus before being awarded certificates and goodie bags for their efforts. CCSD reminds the community to practice safe driving in and around school zones with the following school bus safety tips: Keep a safe distance when driving behind a school bus and when the school bus comes to a stop. Clark County School District (CCSD) is partnering with Green our Planet and Clark County Commission Chairwoman Marilyn Kirkpatrick to host the event on Wednesday, Oct. 23, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Clark County Government Center Amphitheater (500 S. Grand Central Pkwy. Las Vegas, 89155). Billed as the largest student market in the U.S., the free event will feature approximately 600 students in Southern Nevada. Students run the market themselves, selling fruits and vegetables that are grown in school gardens and handmade crafts. CCSD Magnet Schools, Career & Technical Academies, and Select Schools will hold a Fall Choice Fair on Oct. 18 from 9-1 p.m. at Spring Valley High School, 3750 S. Buffalo Dr., Las Vegas. Under the leadership reorganization announced by Superintendent Dr. Jesus F. Jara in January 2019, three region superintendents – Debbie Brockett, Grant Hanevold and Dr. Karla Loria – supervise all Clark County School District schools.
