Perkins was the first African-American to serve as Superintendent of CCSD from 1978 to 1981.  He has a long and distinguished career in teaching, program development, and educational leadership. Mission High School in Downtown Las Vegas was founded in 2017 as the first publicly funded high school in the nation designed to serve students in grades 9-12 who are in recovery from substance abuse, use, and/or dependency.  Education Week recently featured students and staff from the school in a story focused on student well-being. Two new officers will join the Clark County School District Police Department (CCSDPD) after graduating from the Vegas Valley Police Academy on Thursday, February 15. The graduation was held at the College of Southern Nevada’s North Las Vegas Campus. Officer Pedro Robles-Robles and Officer Abigail Short took their oath during the ceremony. They will join 186 police officers who protect the District’s students and staff each day. The officers will now begin field training. Once completed, they will join CCSDPD’s Middle School Division. The Las Vegas Academy Theatre Conservatory staff and students swept up several wins during the annual Musical Theater Competitions of America (MTCA) Festival in Anaheim, CA. The school received group awards and took 1st and 2nd place in an advanced high school musical production of Seussical and an advanced medley for Jason Robert Brown, respectively. The group also received the high school sweepstakes award. The festival celebrated its 20th year of education, competition and musical theatre for students across the country. With just paper, a pencil, and markers, a 7th-grade history teacher at Marvin M. Sedway Middle School is paying tribute to Black History Month this February. Outside of Thomas Korzon’s classroom, several black and white hand-drawn portraits featuring the likes of abolitionist Frederick Douglass, rock star Jimi Hendrix and former NASA astronaut Dr. Mae C. Durango High School students have won the NASA TechRise Challenge for the second year in a row! After presenting their plans for a rocket-powered lander, students will begin working on the official prototype under the name “Project Helios.” Students will have a chance to test their experiments on a NASA-sponsored commercial suborbital flight platform.  The proposal submitted for Project Helios met the requirements for a winning rocket-powered lander: the ability to fly for approximately two minutes at an altitude of 80 feet over a test field designed to look like the moon’s surface. Fitzgerald was the first African-American principal in Nevada in 1956 at Kit Carson Elementary School, currently known as Helen Toland International Academy. He also served as principal of Jo Mackey Elementary School from 1961 to 1972. He worked for the District for 25 years.
