Durango High School is proud to recognize Damen Smith as its 2018-19 Star Graduate. The road has been long for Damen. In middle school, Damen struggled with building positive relationships with his peers and with his teachers. As a freshman, Damen admits to getting caught up with older students who were not focused in the right direction. He was frequently in trouble and did not have a plan for his future. The Senate Finance Committee and Assembly Ways and Means Committee held a joint meeting to hear Senate Bill 543, which would modernize Nevada’s education funding formula. The final budget for the Clark County School District 2019-2020 school year was unanimously approved by the Board of School Trustees. The Trustees are required by state law to pass a final, balanced budget by early June. There are no major changes from the tentative budget presented to Trustees in April, as the district does not know how much additional funding will be received from the Legislature. The Budget can be reopened at any point before December to add in additional funds, including dollars for employee raises. Brigitte Molina started Morris Sunset East High School as a slightly rebellious sophomore. She had bad experiences at her previous school. Constant bullying and being told that she would never accomplish anything or graduate pushed her into a state of depression and constant anxiety. She gave up on life at one point, quitting school and falling deeper into depression. With support from her mother, she enrolled into Morris Sunset in the fall of 2018. Already on track, it was easy to develop a plan of action for Brigitte to advance and complete high school within three years. It was her…

The Clark County School District Board of School Trustees received a Legislative update on bills that could impact CCSD. Currently, there are approximately 226 bills that could impact CCSD in one way or another. Trustees were updated on SB 543 which, if passed, would revise Nevada’s funding formula for the K-12 public education system. The first hearing for this bill is expected to occur Tuesday. Modernizing Nevada’s funding formula remains CCSD’s top legislative priority. CCSD Government Relations staff are in contact with Sen. Mo Denis, Sen. Khara was the first student to enter Mission High School, a school that supports students who are in recovery from drug or alcohol addiction. The Clark County School District honored its 18,000-plus dedicated educators through a variety of activities and special recognitions during Teacher Appreciation Week, May 6-10. Teachers change the lives of children on a daily basis, and their impact extends far beyond the classroom. Teacher Appreciation Week is an opportunity to honor those who lend their skills and passion to educating the children of Southern Nevada. Bridget Egan embodies all that is good about young people today: dedication, passion and a multitude of talents. As a result of her tenacity, she has developed very clear educational and vocational goals. In an effort to achieve these goals, Bridget has pursued a rigorous college preparatory curriculum. While being proactive to make her goals a reality, Bridget applied to and was accepted at the College of Southern Nevada High School West, a dual credit program. Upon successful completion of all her academic coursework, Bridget will have about 60 transferable college credits and currently garners a 4.625 grade point average.…
