Gov. Steve Sisolak announced that 10 additional schools have met the requirements to be designated as an official Governor’s STEM School.  The 10 new schools serve urban and rural students throughout southern and northern Nevada. Dara Katz Palo Verde High School’s 2019 Star Graduate. Dara has maintained a rigorous course schedule, and has excelled in AP and Honors-level courses, achieving a 4.16 grade point average. She has scored in the 99th percentiles for both the SAT and the ACT tests, and has received a National Merit Commendation. She has a passion for engineering and completed the four-year Project Lead the Way engineering course while at Palo Verde. Grady Call, a senior at Moapa Valley High School, has long been an integral part of the high school and the Moapa community. Grady has exemplified his character and leadership in Student Council, as well as National Honor Society (NHS) and Spanish Honor Society. Working as the NHS Blood Drive coordinator, Grady has put in countless hours supporting the cause and the community. His involvement has included offices held in Eco Squad; Family, Career and Community Leaders of America; and our spirit-centered club, Skull and Bones. Desert Oasis High School Star Graduate is Yuhan Jiang. Yuhan moved to the U.S. at the beginning of her 10th-grade year. Not only was it difficult for her to catch up due to the language and cultural barriers, she also did not have any transferable credits. She has attended summer school every summer to work on catching up from ninth grade, as well as taking extra credits throughout the school year. When Yuhan started, she was in regular classes and in the English Language Learner class. By her second year (11th grade), she went from regular math to Honors. Now,…

In an effort to increase the transparency and openness of the Clark County School District budget, the District created Open Book, a public, online resource with details of the District and school budgets. Please take this 11-question survey to let us know your experience using Open Book.  The survey will take less than five minutes to complete, and is anonymous. The results will be utilized as a blueprint to continue improving users’ experience with Open Book. The survey runs through April 30.

Five Northwest Career and Technical Academy speech and debate students qualified for the National Speech and Debate Tournament in Dallas. Joseph Leyson is a senior successfully completing Northwest Career and Technical Academy’s biomedical program. Joseph’s autism creates many challenges for him, specifically in the realm of peer to peer communication, self-advocacy and verbal or written expression. Over the course of four years, Joseph has worked hard to improve his communication and expression skills. In spite of his autism, Joseph chose one of the harder programs at NWCTA. The biomedical program is rigorous and demanding, but Joseph has met every challenge. Lastly, Joseph suffered the tragic loss of his father as a sophomore. This loss left a huge hole in his family,…
