Learning “On the Go”: University of Family Learning

Family and Community Engagement Services (FACES) offers families and caregivers the opportunity to develop skills to support learning at home through the many offerings of the University of Family Learning (UFL) “On the Go.”

The University of Family Learning is an opportunity for adult family members of current and future CCSD students to access valuable educational, networking and parent leadership information along with opportunities to increase both family and student success.

Parents are invited to participate in a variety of courses and workshops in support of the Clark County School District’s Focus: 2024 strategic goals. The UFL has offerings for everyone who wants to learn more about education, child development, wellness, personal development and more. You can be a mother, father, grandparent, aunt, uncle, or even an older sibling. We encourage everyone to visit the FACES website at faces.ccsd.net to review the UFL course catalog.

The course catalog is updated twice a year, in the fall and in the spring, ensuring we are meeting the diverse needs of the families and community we serve. The UFL has four focus areas:

  • Parents as Teaching Partners focuses on academically focused coursework aimed at having families and caregivers reinforce learning at home.
  • Navigating the School System provides a guide for parents and families to access information and resources about the nation’s fifth-largest school district.
  • Involvement, Leadership and Advocacy classes are created to foster parent leaders as advocates for all children.
  • Promoting Wellness and Development courses provide families with courses focused on the overall well-being of the family and the development of the whole child.

These focus areas support individuals so they can be better prepared to support learning at home so that students can accomplish academic success.

Most of the UFL classes and workshops are presented in both English and Spanish.  Our goal is to make all of our resources accessible to the communities that we serve.

Classes and workshops are offered in the mornings before school, during school, late afternoons and in the evenings. FACES recognizes that CCSD is a unique community, so it offers classes at multiple times to ensure all families can participate in these learning opportunities.

The UFL “On the Go” classes and workshops are offered throughout the District at all CCSD schools, community centers, libraries and the 10 Title I Family Engagement Centers located throughout the district.

FACES encourages families to review the FACES calendar to find classes they may be interested in attending. Schools invite families to attend these classes and workshops in numerous ways, such as through promotional flyers, personal phone calls, the school marquee and personal invitations.

FACES welcomes families and caregivers to register at one of the Title I Family Engagement Centers to track their UFL contact hour credits. FACES honors individuals who meet the yearly credit hour goal of 50 hours.

“We celebrate the commitment by these individuals at an end-of-school-year Ceremony of Achievement, inviting family, community partners and schools to join FACES in honoring the dedication of these families and caregivers,” says Eva Melendrez, a FACES coordinator. “We recognize their success and acknowledge their role in creating the necessary home-school partnership, so that all students can achieve academic success.”
