Families can learn strategies on how to foster good attendance, which is linked to student success

Clark County School District’s (CCSD) Family and Community Engagement Services (FACES) will work closely with schools and families this year to emphasize attendance – a critical part of CCSD’s Focus: 2024 strategic plan – and the importance it plays on overall school success for all students.

Research shows that excessive absences are a critical warning sign that can lead to students dropping out. According to the nonprofit America’s Promise Alliance, researchers stress that developing strong and good attendance habits begins as early as kindergarten.

FACES — which provides families, parents, caregivers, and community members with the tools, resources, and academic supports needed to foster home-school relationships and reinforce their children’s learning at home — will offer its Attendance Matters workshop this year.

The Attendance Matters workshop is critical to providing families strategies on how they can support good attendance, which is directly linked to a student’s overall academic success. Families and caregivers are critical to instilling these habits early on in the lives of their children.

The workshop will share with families:

  • the importance of children being in school every day on time and ready to learn
  • how parents should prepare students for school, college, and life
  • how parents are in the best position to ensure their children attend school and to set those expectations

In addition, schools are prepared to assist families with addressing any barriers to attendance by offering supports through their individual school counselors, social workers, and other community resources.

The Attendance Matters workshop is one of many workshops and courses offered through the University of Family Learning (UFL). FACES provides adult family members an opportunity to access valuable hands-on educational opportunities.

The District encourages family members and caregivers to participate in a variety of workshops and courses, including Parents as Teaching Partners; Navigating the School System; Involvement, Leadership, and Advocacy; and Promoting Wellness and Development.

It is through interactive workshops, such as Attendance Matters, and community partnerships that FACES and community partners continue to build strong family-school partnerships. These partnerships are the foundation necessary to build strong meaningful relationships that secure academic success for all students.

If you know someone family members who would like to enroll in an Attendance Matters workshop, they should contact FACES at 702-799-0303.
