FACES courses empower parents to support students and navigate school system

The Family and Community Engagement Services (FACES) Department helps parents support their child’s academics, and also empowers them to feel comfortable in and navigate the school system.

Knowing that family engagement plays a pivotal role in student success, last school year more than 6,900 parents took courses through the University of Family Learning (UFL).

The UFL is an opportunity for adult members of current and future Clark County School District students to access valuable educational, networking, and parent leadership information and opportunities that increase both family and student success.

Every UFL workshop offers contact hour credit. For every workshop the parents attend, they get credit toward the 50-hour goal to earn a Certificate of Achievement. CCSD recognizes parents who meet the yearly goal of 50 hours at an end-of-the-year Ceremony of Achievement.

With the 2018-19 Ceremony of Achievement a few months away, there is still time for those interested in participating in the UFL to achieve 50 hours.  Participating in the workshops offered through the UFL is an excellent way for families to learn how to better help their children and effectively advocate for their kids.

A great example of a parent leader is Marta Rivas de Castro. Marta has been attending workshops at the FACES Family Engagement Center at Manuel J. Cortez Elementary School, as well as workshops at Roy W. Martin Middle School and Ruben P. Diaz Elementary School.

Marta is on track to earn her fifth Certificate of Achievement.

“After attending all of the workshops, I have learned so much about how to support my children,” Marta says. “Now I feel comfortable volunteering at the schools. I am appreciative of all of the learning opportunities.”
