The Clark County School District (CCSD) is celebrating Black History Month by sharing the inspiring stories of CCSD’s African-American namesakes who were pioneers in their profession and some of the District’s firsts in education.  Kermit Roosevelt Booker, Sr. was one of the first African-American teachers in CCSD when he and his family moved to Las Vegas in 1955. As a man dedicated to his community, Mr. Booker spent many years as an educator in Missouri and Kansas before becoming a teacher. Students at Sunrise Mountain High School had the unique opportunity to meet with professional athletes, sports representatives and gaming representatives on and off the field for the EA Sports’ “Field the Future” event. Students sat in on a panel discussion covering “Empowerment, equity and growth for women in the world of football and gaming.” Following the panel, students had a chance to work with the athletes on the field.

The Clark County School District (CCSD) once again earned national recognition for its Magnet programs, with 35 programs taking honors from Magnet Schools of America (MSA) for the 2023-24 school year. This tops the District’s 29 programs MSA recognized for the 2022-23 school year. The national association for Magnet and theme-based schools selected 35 CCSD programs at 34 schools as merit recipients. Elementary students are encouraged to enter the annual Vegas PBS KIDS Writers Contest.
