The extraordinary generosity of Bob and Sandy Ellis is well known, especially for thousands of students, teachers, support professionals and principals who serve in the Clark County School District. Nevertheless, it was uplifting to see their good works highlighted in a front-page article in the Dec. 22, 2018, edition of the Las Vegas Review-Journal, sharing with all Southern Nevadans the story of the Ellises’ goodwill over decades. The School-Community Partnership’s Safe Routes to School program encourages children to walk and bicycle safely to and from school. CCSD works with our schools and generous community partners to address challenges and barriers to walking and bicycling for students. CCSD is currently seeking positive role models to give our struggling students the tools and confidence they need in order to stay in school and successfully graduate. Mentors serve as trusted and caring adults, and empower students by helping them gain self-esteem and confidence in and outside of the classroom. Just before the winter break, the Las Vegas Review-Journal, Las Vegas Sun, and The Nevada Independent separately profiled three exceptional high school seniors. Superintendent Dr. Jesus F. Jara recognized each of these students during his State of the Schools keynote address. Ian Alexander of Clark High School, Jayla Scott of East Career and Technical Academy, and Pablo Alarcon of Clark High School overcame hardship to excel in the classroom and beyond.
