The Las Vegas Aces professional basketball team has announced a new mentorship program for high school girls’ basketball programs in the Clark County School District through the district’s School-Community Partnership Office. Schools are invited to apply for the program. The three teams selected will have a series of sessions on and off the court to learn about college apps, college recruiting and financial literacy. The Aces will also provide those that are selected with special access to Aces players; complimentary invitation to an Aces basketball clinic; free tickets to an Aces game; and in-game recognition. The Clark County School District (CCSD) Board of School Trustees elected their officers for the 2019 calendar year during a work session public meeting today. The board selected Trustee Lola Brooks to serve as president, Trustee Linda P. Cavazos to serve as vice president, and Trustee Chris Garvey to serve as clerk. Trustee Brooks represents District E and was first elected to the school board in 2016. She most recently served as clerk in 2018. Representing District G is Trustee Cavazos, who was first appointed to the board in August, 2017 after the seat was vacated by Trustee Erin E.…

During a special meeting, District Judge Nancy L. Alff administered the oath of office to the three newly elected members of the Clark County School District (CCSD) Board of Trustees: • Linda P. Cavazos, District G Trustee • Irene Cepeda, District D Trustee • Danielle Ford, District F Trustee Trustee Cavazos, a former teacher who works as a therapist, was appointed to the board in August 2017, to replace Trustee Erin E. About 20 percent of Clark County School District (CCSD) students report they do not feel safe at school. So far, in the 2018-19 school year, 14 guns have been recovered on CCSD school campuses. In an effort to engage the community to improve school safety, Superintendent Dr. Jesus F. Jara announced the formation of a School Safety Advisory Committee, which included community members, elected officials, faith leaders, school principals and police officials. In a surprise ceremony, the Young Dreamers Foundation presented two Ernest A. Becker Sr. Middle School students with home workstations for winning an essay contest that focused on their natural, inherent skills and how they plan to use those talents to achieve their future goals. The nationally-recognized foundation aims to inspire children of all ages to set goals while providing tools to help them navigate through life’s challenges with positivity and perseverance. Vegas Verdes Elementary School held its Fine Arts Festival in December, featuring choir performances, an art scavenger hunt and face painting. Students’ art projects were displayed throughout the campus. In addition, parents and teachers helped decorate the courtyard, giving it a winter wonderland look.

The Clark County School District’s (CCSD) final graduation rate for the Class of 2018 is a record high 85.22 percent, an increase of 2 percentage points over the previous year, according to final data compiled by the Nevada Department of Education. The theme of this year’s Southern Nevada Educator Leadership Symposium (SNELS) on Jan. 26 at Spring Valley High School – “Elevating Education” – will engage educators, support professionals and parents in Southern Nevada, focusing on the spectrum of education leadership opportunities available to them.
