One of the important objectives of Clark County School District’s (CCSD) Focus: 2024 strategic plan is to improve parent and community support, leveraging internal resources to help parents/guardians support student achievement and attendance. To further that objective, CCSD’s Family and Community Engagement Services (FACES) program is launching Super Saturday workshops that will be held eight times during the 2019-20 academic school year. Zappos recently unveiled its seventh school closet in its Closets for Good program, the locally focused charitable initiative in collaboration with Closets Las Vegas and Born This Way Foundation. Superintendent Dr. Jesus F. Jara was on hand to commemorate the closet ribbon cutting. Closets for Good works with local elementary, middle, and high schools — whose students and their families may face economic challenges — by stocking each campus’ closet with everyday necessities, including nonperishable food, school supplies, hygiene products, shoes, and clothing. The Clark County School District (CCSD) has approved a new program designed to help former students earn their high school diploma and develop the skills needed for high-demand jobs. The program, which will be operated by Acceleration Academies, will work in collaboration with CCSD’s Education Services Division through a public-private partnership. Students under the age of 21, who have left CCSD for at least one academic semester, will be able to come back to earn a Clark County School District Diploma in a supportive, individualized program. “This program can help students rediscover a love for learning and a career path…

A total of 67 Clark County School District (CCSD) high school students have been selected as semifinalists in the 2020 National Merit Scholarship Program through the National Merit Scholarship Corporation. They represent less than one percent of the U.S. high school seniors and qualify to continue in the competition for National Merit Scholarships worth more than $31 million to be offered next spring.  These students were among the highest-scoring participants in Nevada, and out of more than 1.5 million juniors in more than 21,000 high schools nationwide, who entered the program by taking the 2018 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying…

This new CCSD program provides an option for students under the age of 21 who have not completed a high school diploma and who have been out of school for at least one academic semester. They offer flexible hours and one course a month on an accelerated timeline leading to a CCSD high school diploma. Acceleration Academy is enrolling now. Two Clark County School District (CCSD) schools held separate ceremonies in honor of those who lost their lives on Sept. 11, 2001.  Palo Verde High School’s Air Force JROTC held  its annual rededication ceremony in remembrance of the victims, including the school’s foreign language teacher Barbara Edwards. Edwards was a passenger on American Airlines Flight 77, which crashed into the Pentagon on 9/11.  Joseph M. The Clark County School District (CCSD) Transportation Department will host a job fair on Saturday, Sept. 7 from 8 a.m. to noon at 4499 S. Arville Yard, Las Vegas. As part of the event, applicants can apply onsite and they will have the opportunity to talk with current drivers about their duties. Applicants will also have the opportunity to ride in a bus around the yard to get a feel for what it is like to be a bus driver. Bus drivers earn $15.30 per hour. In observance of Labor Day, all CCSD schools and offices will be closed. All classes will resume on Tuesday, September 3.
