CCSD Board of School Trustees meeting recap, Sept. 10

Agenda Item 4.01 – Rescind the Name of Kit Carson Elementary School

The Clark County School District (CCSD) Board of School Trustees voted to rescind the name of Kit Carson Elementary School in accordance with CCSD Policy 7223. The school located near D Street and Alexander Avenue was built in 1956.

CCSD estimates the name change, approved by Trustees, will cost between $29,000 and $40,500. Trustees asked CCSD to work with the community to find funds to cover the cost of the renaming.

Agenda Item 6.01 – Superintendent Communications

CCSD Superintendent Dr. Jesus F. Jara clarified information to the Board of School Trustees in regard to attendance numbers and students CCSD is attempting to contact about technology needs.

“As of today, September 10, 25,371 students have not participated in the roll call. This number is related to student connectivity,” said Superintendent Jara. “The number represents students who have not participated in the CCSD survey to assess technology needs. Therefore, we do not have evidence that they have a reliable Internet connection or a device such as a computer or Chromebook.“

“Students may be participating in distance education in some format. As of the same date, 98.73 percent of our enrolled students have been marked as present since the beginning of the school year. Students may be contacting their teacher via phone, or working on assignments via paper and pencil work. However, since CCSD does not have connectivity evidence, these students have been placed on our “roll call.”

The Superintendent informed the board that there have been 5,562 applications under the CCSD CARES Act Funding Subsidy Program for internet connectivity.
