The Clark County School District (CCSD) is celebrating Black History Month by sharing the inspiring stories of CCSD’s African-American namesakes who were pioneers in their profession and some of the District’s firsts in education.  Dr. Carolyn S. Reedom began her tenure in the Clark County School District (CCSD) in 1970, serving students and families as a teacher, dean of students, high school assistant principal, principal and assistant superintendent. She was the first female and African-American president of the Nevada Association of School Administrators. After the dismissal bell rings at Lomie G. Heard Elementary School every Tuesday and Wednesday, the cafeteria transforms into the headquarters for an after-school drone club. Heard Elementary School, a Clark County School District (CCSD) Magnet School, piloted the unique drone club for fourth and fifth grade students last year, and it’s really taken off. “We get to fly drones and have some fun,” said fourth-grader Marysel Alano. “I’m hoping it gets bigger and more people join.” The club has a total of 18 students working in six teams. Mission High School in Downtown Las Vegas was founded in 2017 as the first publicly funded high school in the nation designed to serve students in grades 9-12 who are in recovery from substance abuse, use, and/or dependency.  Education Week recently featured students and staff from the school in a story focused on student well-being. Two new officers will join the Clark County School District Police Department (CCSDPD) after graduating from the Vegas Valley Police Academy on Thursday, February 15. The graduation was held at the College of Southern Nevada’s North Las Vegas Campus. Officer Pedro Robles-Robles and Officer Abigail Short took their oath during the ceremony. They will join 186 police officers who protect the District’s students and staff each day. The officers will now begin field training. Once completed, they will join CCSDPD’s Middle School Division. The Las Vegas Academy Theatre Conservatory staff and students swept up several wins during the annual Musical Theater Competitions of America (MTCA) Festival in Anaheim, CA. The school received group awards and took 1st and 2nd place in an advanced high school musical production of Seussical and an advanced medley for Jason Robert Brown, respectively. The group also received the high school sweepstakes award. The festival celebrated its 20th year of education, competition and musical theatre for students across the country.
