The legacy of Edmundo “Eddie” Escobedo will live on forever within the Clark County School District (CCSD) community. For this week’s National Hispanic Heritage Month feature, we will highlight Edmundo “Eddie” Escobedo, a distinguished businessman and supporter of various local Hispanic and civic organizations in Las Vegas. Born in Torreon, Coahuila, Mexico, Mr. Escobedo arrived in El Paso, Texas in 1953 where he worked in the food service industry before enlisting into the Air Force where he worked on jet mechanics as a parachute rigger. Two recent Clark County School District (CCSD) graduates have been named 2025 U.S. Presidential Scholars. Roxy D. Jones of Ed W. Clark High School and Joshua Park of West Career and Technical Academy are two of just 161 high school students across the nation who are being recognized with this prestigious award. Roxy and Joshua’s academic, artistic, and technical achievements helped them rise above the field. The Clark County School District (CCSD) will observe the Week of Respect during the first week of October, beginning Monday, September 29, through Friday, October 4. Schools across the District will participate in activities all week to emphasize a safe and respectful learning environment. Celebrated every year, the Week of Respect highlights the efforts to address discrimination based on race, bullying, or cyberbullying and creating a safe and respectful learning environment. LAS VEGAS – The Clark County School District (CCSD) has launched a survey for the community starting today, September 26, as the District considers shifting all school start times by 30 minutes for the 2026–2027 school year. Parents/guardians, students and CCSD staff are encouraged to fill out the survey between now and 5 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 17. It should take approximately 3 minutes or less to complete. Raul P. Elizondo, Jr. was born in Mesa, Arizona on July 21, 1967. He was raised in Henderson, Nevada and attended Basic High School, where he was a member of the 1984 State Championship wrestling team. His mother, Ann, was a teacher at the Clark County School District. Officer Elizondo became a North Las Vegas police officer on March 13, 1992, and was recognized for his dedicated service within two years by the Chief of Police. He received the highest award possible from the North Las Vegas Police Association and was honored as the 1994 Police Office of the Year. …

Dr. Diaz was born in 1953 in California, where he stayed and pursued various educational titles. He received a double degree in nursing and biology from California State University. He then received his medical degree from the University of California, Irvine, and later followed it with a fellowship in Pediatric Pulmonary Medicine in Los Angeles. Manuel J. Cortez, better known by family, friends, and associates throughout the Southern Nevada community as “Manny” was a man for whom the words “public service” had a deep resonance. Mr. Cortez, originally from Las Cruces, New Mexico, moved to Las Vegas with his family in 1944, at the age of five. After graduating from Las Vegas High School and serving three years in the Army, he returned to Las Vegas to further his education at Nevada Southern University.
