LAS VEGAS – 76 Clark County School District (CCSD) high school students have been selected as 2025 National Merit Scholarship semifinalists through the National Merit Scholarship Corporation. National Hispanic Heritage Month is celebrated from Sept. 15 – Oct. 15 each year. This is a time to highlight Hispanic heritage and culture and to recognize the contributions made by the Hispanic members of our community. Hispanic Americans have influenced and enriched our nation through history, culture and accomplishments.  Throughout the month, we will be highlighting CCSD Hispanic namesakes who have made significant contributions to our District.  Also, make sure to follow our Facebook, Instagram, and X accounts to see how schools are celebrating! 

The Clark County Division of Air Quality (DAQ) issued a smoke alert for today, September 11, 2024, due to wildfire smoke from multiple wildfires in California; therefore, the Clark County School District has canceled all non-essential outdoor activities for today. Outdoor activities including lunch, physical education classes, and recess, have been moved indoors. All conference athletic events will be rescheduled and attempts will be made to reschedule all other canceled athletic events.

Multiple Clark County School District (CCSD) schools paid tribute to the lives lost during the terrorist attacks that happened 23 years ago on September 11, 2001. Valley High School hosted its annual remembrance ceremony with the school’s Army JROTC students holding the U.S. flag saluting victims of the 9/11 tragedy. Palo Verde High School also hosted its annual rededication ceremony in honor of the victims including its former world language teacher, Barbara Edwards. Subaru has donated a “Subaru Loves Learning School Supply Vehicle” to the Clark County School District’s Engagement Unit. Students and staff gathered at Myrtle Tate Elementary School to celebrate alongside CCSD Board of School Trustees member Lisa Satory as well as CCSD Deputy Superintendent Melissa Gutierrez. The Subaru Vehicle will allow CCSD staff to efficiently transport school supplies and other resources in order to support students throughout the school year. Through their partnership with AdoptAClassroom.org, Subaru has been able to support more than 750,000 students nationwide.

Sandra B. Abston Elementary School is now the proud host of a Dog Man Little Free Library! The students and staff celebrated the unveiling of the little library that gives students the opportunity to borrow a book, exchange a book for another book, and donate a book.  Author Dav Pilkey, known for his popular children’s books series such as Captain Underpants and Dog Man, has partnered with Scholastic to donate 50,000 books nationwide. CCSD celebrated the opening of the brand-new Mountain View Elementary School campus with a ribbon-cutting ceremony. CCSD Board of School Trustees members Brenda Zamora, Lisa Satory and Interim Superintendent Brenda Larsen-Mitchell were in attendance to celebrate alongside students, staff, as well as the school principal. Originally built in 1954, the new campus is the first of CCSD’s new elementary school prototype. The first-of-its-kind design features flexible learning spaces of multiple sizes and shapes, organized by a geometric theme. Students will gain an improved understanding of shape, color, texture, and measurement.

The students at Harvey N. Dondero Elementary School are once again ready to grow their favorite fruits and vegetables, along with their understanding of science and nature. Thanks to community support and a donation from The Home Depot, the Dondero Elementary Student Garden Club rebuilt the school’s garden. Having a garden on campus, the school’s staff aims to promote sustainability, learn about environmental conservation, promote soil health, and provide fresh produce to the community. Happy Labor Day! Celebrated on the first Monday of September, Labor Day recognizes the American labor movement and the work and contributions of laborers to the development of the United States.  In observance, all CCSD schools and offices will be closed on Monday, September 2, 2024, in observance of Labor Day. Schools and offices will reopen on Tuesday, September 3, 2024.
