The Clark County School District is preparing to submit a competitive proposal to the Nevada Department of Education to expand the 21st Century Community Learning Centers (21st CCLC) grant program. Planning for the specifics of program implementation is ongoing and student, parent, and community input is encouraged. The public may contact the CCSD 21st CCLC Coordinator, Dawna Alexander, at 702-799-1196 for more information. Application for the grant must be submitted by February 21, 2020. If awarded, this federally funded program will expand afterschool programming that provides students with evidence-based academic and enrichment opportunities. Clark County School District (CCSD) Superintendent Dr. Jesus F. Jara delivered State of the Schools address alongside CCSD Board of School Trustees members. The 2020 State of the Schools address included a discussion of progress toward goals laid out in the five-year strategic plan, Focus: 2024, along with continuing efforts to increase student success. The excellence of the Clark County School District (CCSD) Magnet School programs has once again been recognized by Magnet Schools of America (MSA). In making its annual announcement of outstanding Magnet schools,  MSA selected 36 CCSD programs at 34 schools as Merit recipients for 2019-20. Sixteen CCSD Magnet Schools were awarded Schools of Excellence designation and 19 schools were awarded Schools of Distinction designation. Two programs at Rancho High School earned the MSA Magnet School of Excellence Award. The school earned recognition for its Academy of Pre-Medicine and Academy of Aviation Science & Technology. Nevada Moves Week, held during March 16-20, is a statewide event that encourages students, parents and staff to walk or bike to school and get physically active. Students who attend Helen Jydstrup Elementary School, located near Jones Boulevard between Tropicana and Hacienda Avenues, often come from homes that are economically disadvantaged. As an example, 100 percent of the school’s students are eligible for free or reduced-price meals, so there is an abundant need for community support. City National Bank saw the need nearly two decades ago, and the bank began partnering with the Clark County School District in 2002. Jydstrup Elementary School was the first school the bank assisted. Ed W. Clark High School’s students and staff celebrated the completion of their new football field last month with a ribbon-cutting ceremony that featured the school’s football and flag football teams, marching band, and cheerleaders. The Clark County School District (CCSD) Board of School Trustees recently approved a plan to reallocate funds in the 2015 Capital Improvement Program to address the aging infrastructure on CCSD campuses. As part of that plan, CCSD is in the process of making renovations to ensure the full-service life of schools’ infrastructure, including football fields. In observance of National School Counseling Week February 3-7, 2020, guidance and counseling professionals were recognized throughout the Clark County School District (CCSD). Priest Elementary Celebrates RAMP Designation School counselors at Richard C. Priest Elementary School were recognized for their hard work in helping students achieve school success and plan for college and career readiness. Priest Elementary School is celebrating being designated by the American School Counselor Association (ASCA) as a Recognized ASCA Model Program (RAMP) School this year.
