High school students at West Career and Technical Academy (CTA) are setting new standards in creativity and innovation through their biotechnology projects. Armed with nearly three years of biotech knowledge, these students are tackling real-world problems with solutions that are not only practical but also groundbreaking.

One standout project features Dum Gum, a 3-in-1 chewing gum that combines biological science and innovation. The gum combines food-grade diatomaceous earth and Lactobacillus salivarius, a beneficial bacteria that activates as you chew. The bacteria release compounds that fight harmful oral bacteria, addressing issues like bad breath, tooth decay, and even gum disease. This project showcases how students integrate business strategies into their scientific endeavors by crafting a complete business plan for their product.

Another group presented a solution to one of the world’s most critical environmental challenges: radioactive contamination. Their concept, the Isotopic Nucleophile, is a specially designed plant with bioremediation capabilities. This plant absorbs heavy metals and radioactive contaminants from the soil, effectively restoring the land for future use.

These projects reflect the unique opportunities provided by West CTA, where students gain hands-on experience in biotechnology, business development, and public speaking. The program equips them with skills they’ll carry into college and beyond. As one student expressed, “It was really amazing that we were able to do this, especially in a high school setting, and I’m really grateful for the experience that I got here and what I’ll be able to take with me into college and beyond”

From oral health to environmental restoration, these future scientists are proving that the next generation of innovators is ready to make a difference.
