Karly Schindler was passionate about music at an early age. She also knew, as far back as elementary school, that she wanted to be a teacher.

  • Schindler – a flutist, vocalist, and pianist who is now in her 23rd year as an educator – is a music teacher at Sandra B. Abston Elementary School.

“Teaching music brings me joy,” Schindler says. “It allows me to witness the transformative power of music in shaping students’ creativity, confidence, and connection to the world around them, fostering a lifelong love for the arts.”

What they’re saying: Abston Elementary School Principal Michelle Freter says Schindler, who recently earned a doctorate in music education, goes above and beyond to ensure all students have access to “high-quality instruction and meaningful experiences in the arts.”

  • Under Schindler’s guidance, says kindergarten teacher Desiree Bedocs, each school grade is able to star in its own musical production “complete with a background set, unique songs, props, school performances, and night performances for parents.”

Spare time: Schindler enjoys spending time with her husband Lars (a middle school teacher) and teenage sons Max and Mason, is active in her church, travels, reads, and attends music/dance/theatre concerts of all genres.
