The Giant Student Farmers Market is more than just a place to buy fresh produce—it’s an inspiring educational event that empowers students across the district. Organized twice a year by Green Our Planet, a nonprofit dedicated to sustainable education, this market brings together young “farmpreneurs” who are eager to showcase and sell their school-grown produce, handmade crafts, and more.

With every visit to this market, community members find themselves impressed by the enthusiasm and dedication these students bring to the table. From freshly harvested basil and carrots to pomegranates and lavender, the students have grown a wide variety of goods. They also offer unique, handmade crafts like glitter bottles, adding a personal touch that highlights their creativity.

But the learning doesn’t stop at farming. These students gain invaluable hands-on experience in entrepreneurship and financial literacy. As they sell their items, they practice essential life skills like handling money, setting prices, and engaging with customers. Teachers and organizers encourage this real-world learning approach to prepare students with practical knowledge beyond the classroom.

One teacher noted that students are actively involved in the entire process, from planting seeds to selling produce, which helps them connect what they learn in school to real-world situations. For instance, one fifth-grader excitedly explained how they learned to harvest rosemary by hand and how selling it at the market gave them a sense of accomplishment.

With over 330 students from 33 schools participating, this year’s market was a huge success. Together, they raised nearly $10,000, all of which goes directly back to their schools to support garden programs and further opportunities for experiential learning. Through these efforts, Green Our Planet and participating schools hope to inspire a new generation of environmentally conscious entrepreneurs.

The Giant Student Farmers Market is a win-win for both students and the community, teaching valuable skills while connecting people to the sustainable efforts of the next generation. It’s clear that these students are growing far more than just produce—they’re cultivating confidence, responsibility, and a deeper connection to their community.
