Star Grad – Las Vegas Academy of the Arts

Shawn is the first to say his freshman year was difficult because everything was online and everyone was isolated. It was especially difficult to enjoy music classes because he lacked confidence and was afraid of criticism. With online instruction, he missed getting to make friends, direct instruction from teachers, and performing with the orchestra. He was failing his classes. He thought when the lockdown lifted Las Vegas Academy of the Arts would run similar to online instruction. He was ready to give up and go to his zoned school. With help, he stuck it out and quickly benefited from all the opportunities LVA offered.

His situation changed with the guidance and tireless efforts of teachers/staff, his family, and a burning passion for music. “My orchestra teachers and paraprofessionals helped me break out of my shell which allowed me to see my potential,” he said. With his determination, he remained successful devoting time to his academics, orchestra, and his best to “embody the LVA way”. He said “LVA is like the Juilliard of high schools. Everyone always roots for each other’s success.”

Orchestra instructor Mr. Eric McAllister said Shawn brought and keeps his grades up and is always at school, adding that “he is so much help to our department. He constantly asks what he can do to help me and other students.” Shawn will attend Utah Tech University for a bachelor’s degree in music performance, become a traveling performer, join various ensembles, and possibly go back to school to earn a music education degree.
