Michael Duhart is a remarkable student who has profoundly impacted Durango High School professionally and personally. Michael’s work ethic, intellect, and curiosity are the driving forces behind his academic success. He consistently exceeds expectations, engaging with assignments at a systemic level that fosters critical synthesis, evaluation, and a deep understanding of the material. His exceptional comprehension skills make him a natural mentor to his peers, who often turn to him for clarification and guidance.

Michael’s academic record is even more impressive, considering the challenges he has overcome. Born with osteogenesis imperfecta, brittle bone disease, and scoliosis, Michael faced significant physical limitations. His doctors once deemed his bent spine unmanageable without surgery, but Michael chose an alternative path, committing to five to six hours of intensive nonsurgical therapy daily. During this time, he focused on foundational English and math courses, postponing Advanced Placement (AP) classes to prioritize his health. His resilience and determination paid off, allowing him to straighten his spine and regain physical strength. Now, as a Durango High School senior, Michael excels in four AP courses, is a valedictorian candidate, is a National Merit finalist, and is thriving as a traditional high school student.
