In an exciting new docuseries, CITIZEN NATION, PBS follows the inspiring journey of high school students competing in the national “We The People” civics competition. Among the featured teams is Southwest Career and Technical Academy (CTA), whose students spent months preparing to demonstrate their knowledge of the U.S. Constitution.

The series highlights the challenges and triumphs of the competition, where students explore what it means to be an American citizen. According to Joseph Juliano, the We The People advisor at Southwest CTA, the program empowers students by boosting their confidence and encouraging them to speak their minds. “The biggest thing that We The People does for students is to empower them and give them confidence to actually speak their voice,” says Juliano.

Students Elizabeth Fakoya and Ethan Bull, now pursuing higher education, reflect on their time in the competition and the unique experience of being followed by camera crews. Fakoya remembers being nervous but grateful for the opportunity to share her voice, while Bull describes it as one of the best experiences of his life, allowing him to express his thoughts to a future audience.

CITIZEN NATION takes viewers on an intimate journey, showcasing not just the students’ knowledge of the U.S. Constitution, but their passion for civic engagement and desire to make a difference. The series emphasizes the importance of understanding one’s role in a democracy and challenges young people to think critically about their country and their future.

The four-part series is now airing Tuesdays at 9:00 p.m. on Vegas PBS. For those who missed an episode, it’s available for streaming on the PBS app. Don’t miss this opportunity to witness the next generation of leaders in action!
