Volunteers Sought To Serve As Mentors to CCSD Students

The Clark County School District (CCSD) values the positive impact a mentor can play in a student’s life. CCSD’s Stay in School Mentoring Project is seeking to match volunteers in the community – across a wide array of professions – with students who need guidance and support to be successful in school.

“Because of the pandemic, we’re offering a virtual program for this school year,” says Akita McCulloch, program manager of the Stay in School Mentoring Project. “Our goal is to offer quality programming while keeping our students and mentors safe.”

McCulloch adds that for businesses and other organizations with volunteer initiatives, the Stay in School Mentoring Project is a great opportunity for their employees.

On Feb. 10, CCSD will hold two virtual informational sessions on its mentoring project, one at 10 a.m. and the other at 3 p.m. Click here to sign up for one of the sessions lasting a half-hour.

There are two volunteer opportunities for mentors under this program.

One option is Mentor Messages, in which volunteers provide short, prerecorded inspirational messages (5 minutes or less) for students. Mentors can create one or several messages. Suggested topics will be provided to mentors and, of course, their input and expertise is welcomed. There is no time commitment involved.

Another opportunity is Become a Mentor in which the volunteer provides guidance to a student. The mentor is matched with an elementary, middle, or high school student (your choice). The mentor meets with students (virtually) once a month, and these volunteers commit to mentoring for one school year. Mentors participate in a training/orientation session to review important issues, skills, tips, and strategies to promote successful mentoring. There also is an end-of-year evaluation by the mentor to assess the effectiveness of the program. (A background check is required.)

Volunteers can choose one of the two options that is the best fit for them – and are welcome to do both.
