Dedication ceremony held for the Lomie G. Heard Elementary School, A Marzano Academy

A dedication ceremony was held Jan. 22 for the Lomie G. Heard Elementary School, A Marzano Academy, highlighted by student performances.

The original Lomie G. Heard Elementary School, located on Nellis Air Force Base, closed at the end of the 2015-16 school year. The new Lomie G. Heard Elementary School opened in the fall of 2017, as a Magnet STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) school.

The event included a celebration of what would have been Ms. Heard’s 113th birthday.

Ms. Heard moved to Las Vegas in 1944, beginning what was 27 years of service to the Clark County School District. Eventually, she was appointed principal of the new Nellis Air Force Base School, where she served in that role from 1950 to 1971. Upon her retirement in 1971, the school was renamed after her.
