The Clark County School District (CCSD) is celebrating Black History Month by sharing the inspiring stories of CCSD’s African-American namesakes who were pioneers in their profession and some of the District’s firsts in education.

John C. Bass was a teacher, Title 1 Controller and principal at CCSD and served students and families for more than 32 years. Not long after becoming a school district employee, Mr. Bass, along with fellow teachers, designed and implemented the first after-school program for students who lived in West Las Vegas.

He taught many students how to play various sports and held annual tournaments, including the “29 Palms Invitational Basketball Tournament” for 36 years! He worked tirelessly with programs and organizations that were youth-oriented as an effective educator and youth advocate. He was especially committed to programs for special needs and at-risk students. Mr. Bass gave back to youth in the community by supplying food and resources to help those in need.

John C. Bass Elementary School opened in 2000.
