CCSD mariachi ensemble shines at Carnegie Hall

Mariachi Los Gavilanes de Monaco Middle School experienced a once-in-a-lifetime moment as the music group took center stage at the prestigious Carnegie Hall in New York City. The ensemble, comprising 16 talented students, was the only middle school group invited to perform alongside three high school ensembles from Texas, all distinguished national award winners in the realm of mariachi music.

The event, titled ¡Viva El Mariachi! ¡Homenaje a la Música Mexicana!, was held in June and celebrated the rich cultural heritage of mariachi music. Mariachi Los Gavilanes de Monaco Middle School captivated the audience with their heartfelt renditions while gracing the stage that has featured legendary musicians over the last two centuries including Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, George Gershwin and The Beatles.

The middle school students made the most of their trip to the Big Apple and also participated in a pop-up musical performance in Times Square.

Mariachi Los Gavilanes de Monaco Middle School has notably performed alongside the Temptations and the Four Tops, and students have had the honor of playing for luminaries over the years such as Carlos Santana, City of Las Vegas Mayor Carolyn Goodman and former Senator Harry Reid.
