CCSD celebrates its namesakes: Tony Alamo

Tony Alamo was born June 4, 1941 in Isabela de Sagua, Cuba before arriving in Miami in 1961.   In 1963, he married his wife Maria and moved to Nevada in 1974, where he became a U.S. citizen. Mr. Alamo’s college education and U.S. citizenship was earned entirely through his own effort. He is a passionate advocate of freedom, hard work, integrity and education. He began his  career in gaming as a janitor for Harrah’s Hotel in Reno, Nevada and worked his way up the corporate ladder. 

Mr. Alamo has served as a Commissioner on Tourism and served on the selection committee for Military Academics. He has been recognized by the community with a Tourism award (1984), Hispanic of the Year award (1993) by the Las Vegas Latin Chamber of Commerce, the Community Hero Award by the National Conference for Community and Justice (NCCJ) and Hotelier of the Year 2001 by the Nevada Hotel and Lodging Association. Today, Mr. Alamo shares his experiences with the community and serves on the board of the Clark County Public Education Foundation and Mandalay Resort Group’s Diversity Committee.
