Ruby Duncan moved to Clark County in 1952. She quickly became aware of the need for services to assist women and children facing poverty. Her advocacy and dedication led her to establish the Operation Life Community Development Corporation in 1972, one of the nation’s most effective anti-poverty programs at the time. They were the first federally funded community development corporation in America that was organized, controlled, and operated by low-income women. Dr. William H. “Bob” Bailey was known as the first African-American TV personality in Nevada. He’s celebrated by many as a civil rights leader and advocate for equal employment, business development, and education. He and his wife moved to Las Vegas in 1955, co-producing the opening show of the city’s first integrated hotel and casino, the Moulin Rouge. Dr. Bailey owned and operated many businesses in Historic West Las Vegas. Bailey Middle School opened in Fall 2005 and was officially dedicated in Spring 2006.

The Clark County School District is proud to celebrate school counselors during National School Counseling Week (NSCW), which is celebrated from February 3 – Feb. 7, 2025. It is an annual celebration to help recognize the importance of school counselors and the role they play in helping students succeed in school along with planning their future. The Clark County School District (CCSD) offers students several programs and schools of interest and prepares them to be college and career-ready. The Clark County School District (CCSD) is sad to hear of the passing of Theron H. Goynes, a CCSD elementary school namesake. He was a lifelong education advocate who left a lasting legacy in southern Nevada. After serving in the United States Air Force, Mr. Goynes began teaching with CCSD in 1964. He served the district as a teacher, counselor, adult education coordinator, assistant principal, and principal and spent 20 years as a North Las Vegas City Councilman. Clark County School District (CCSD) Interim Superintendent Dr. Brenda Larsen-Mitchell delivered the annual State of the Schools address at Del Sol Academy of the Performing Arts, highlighting student and employee achievements, district systems and structures, and community support. CCSD Board of School Trustees President Irene Bustamante Adams attended alongside other Trustees. At the beginning of the school year, students at Advanced Technologies Academy (A-TECH) were presented with a unique question – how could our school survive a zombie apocalypse? It may sound like the plot for a blockbuster movie or popular television show, but in reality, it was an academic assignment intended to develop students’ problem-solving skills. LAS VEGAS – Agenda Item 3.01 – Compliance Monitoring Update The Clark County School District (CCSD) Board of School Trustees accepted the compliance monitoring update related to the corrective action plan requested by the Nevada Department of Education (NDE). CCSD provided the initial corrective action plan to NDE on December 27, 2024. On December 31, 2024, a request was received from the Superintendent of Public Instruction for additional specificity in the plan. CCSD students will participate in activities that contribute to creating a more peaceful world in celebration of Peace Week from January 20-25.  Peace Week focuses on helping educators, students and the community to promote a culture of peace in Nevada and around the world. Individuals work on understanding and managing conflict in their own lives.  CCSD schools are encouraged to share their Peace Week activities on social media using #CCSDPeaceWeek!
