Manuel J. Cortez, better known by family, friends, and associates throughout the Southern Nevada community as “Manny”, was a longtime Las Vegan, a man for whom the words “public service” had a deep resonance. Mr. Cortez was a native Las Cruces, New Mexico. He moved to Las Vegas with is family in 1944, at the age of five. After graduating from Las Vegas High School and serving three years in the Army, he returned to Las Vegas to further his education at Nevada Southern University. There will be no school for ELEMENTARY school students on October 10 due to parent-teacher conferences. Classes will resume on Wednesday, October 11. Middle and high school students will have regularly scheduled classes on October 10.

The Clark County School District (CCSD) recognizes Indigenous People’s Day on Oct. 9, 2023.  The District celebrates and honors the heritage and contributions of Indigenous Americans and its culture. The Clark County School District (CCSD) recognizes Fire Prevention Week from October 8-14 to educate children, adults and teachers on how to stay safe in case of a fire.  CCSD offers students the opportunity to get a jumpstart on preparing for a career in firefighting through the Fire Science Program at Bonanza High School. Nevada Board of Education discussion LAS VEGAS – The Clark County School District (CCSD) continues to express concerns about the Nevada State Board of Education’s discussions surrounding proposed changes to school start times. As CCSD and other school districts have testified multiple times, state law does not give the Nevada State Board of Education the statutory authority to set school start times. CCSD remains hopeful that the Legislative Counsel Bureau and other state authorities will serve as the appropriate check and balance to inform the Board of Education of its overreach. The Clark County School District (CCSD) has added an exciting new tool to support students experiencing homelessness through an agreement with Purposity.  Community members can directly support CCSD students experiencing homelessness by downloading Purposity, a non-profit app connecting users with one-to-one needs in their community. CCSD’s Title I Homeless Outreach Program for Education (HOPE) recently launched a profile that provides community members regular updates on ways they can support students through simple donations from their smartphones.
