“Hands in the soil and the smiles on their faces” perfectly describes the Roundy Elementary School Garden Club as they participate in the CCSD student farmers market. The garden club, which teaches children about gardening, sustainability, and healthy eating, has been working hard to prepare for the market, and their efforts have paid off. Not only are they promoting healthy eating, but they are also learning valuable skills such as budgeting, marketing, and customer service. Through this experience, the Roundy Elementary School Garden Club is empowering students to become active participants in their community.

The Las Vegas Desert Dogs recently made a visit to Walter Johnson Junior High School Academy of International Studies to teach students about the exciting sport of lacrosse. This event provided an opportunity for students to learn about the rules, techniques, and strategies of lacrosse from experienced players. Reading is a crucial skill for a student’s academic and personal success. The awards program serves as a reminder of literacy’s importance and motivates students to strive for academic excellence. Recently, Dr. Jesus F. Jara, the Superintendent of CCSD, surprised three students who made significant gains in their MAP Growth Assessment by presenting them with The Superintendent’s Reading Award.

Liberty High School recently held its first-ever art show, featuring a wide array of stunning artwork created by the school’s talented students. The exhibit included a diverse range of mediums, including painting, photography, ceramics, and drawing, which highlighted the students’ versatility and creativity. The event was an opportunity for the students to showcase their artistic talents and express themselves through their artwork. It was a wonderful event that highlighted the immense talent and creativity of the students at Liberty High School.

The Clark County School District and the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) have partnered to launch an initiative called Project PUEBLO. With funding from ESSER III funds, Project PUEBLO aims to provide a unique learning experience to educators, empowering them with the necessary tools to teach students who are learning English as a second language. Goodie Two Shoes, a non-profit organization based in Las Vegas, has been making a positive impact on the lives of children in need for over 20 years. Since its founding in 2003, the organization has provided new shoes and socks to children who are homeless, in foster care, or from low-income families. By Evelyn Garcia Morales Last weekend, I had the opportunity to attend the Council of the Great City Schools (CGSC) legislative conference in Washington, D.C., with my colleagues on the CCSD Board of Trustees, Superintendent Dr. Jesus Jara, and CCSD staff. The CGSC is a national coalition of 78 of the largest urban public school systems in the country, working towards improving educational outcomes for children in urban districts.
