The CCSD Board of School Trustees voted to designate Monday, April 22, 2019 as the make up day for the missed day of instruction due to inclement weather in February. To clarify, there will not be school Friday, March 22, 2019. There will be school on Monday, April 22, 2019 to serve as the inclement weather make up day.

The Clark County School District Board of School Trustees voted 5-2 to approve April 22, 2019 as the make-up day for the day of instruction lost on Feb. 22, 2019 due to inclement weather. An alternate day of work is being explored for 9-month school-based Support Professionals. The board voted unanimously to start a program that will offer CCSD students a head start on their college education by enrolling in University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV), College of Education courses while in high school. Over 720 Clark County School District teachers have been named finalists for the 2019 The Heart of Education Awards. The Heart Of Education Awards will honor CCSD teachers with an invitation-only event at The Smith Center, where 20 teachers will be selected to receive awards. The prestigious evening will feature a red carpet, swag bags for all of the invited teachers, and spectacular entertainment. Support for the event is provided by The Rogers Foundation and The Smith Center for the Performing Arts.

Team 987 – The High Rollers from Cimarron-Memorial High School won the FIRST Robotics Regional Tournament in San Diego March 8th – 10th.  They competed with 42 other teams from across the world.  Their next Regional competition is in Las Vegas at the Thomas and Mack Center at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV), March 27th – 30th.

The Clark County School District Board of Trustees Audit Advisory Committee is looking to fill one member vacancy. The committee meets at least four times a year. Committee members serve two-year terms. The deadline to submit an application is Friday, April 5. The Board of Trustees formed the Audit Advisory Committee in 2008 to provide advice in the following areas: strengthening accountability for the stewardship and efficient use of public funds; providing a communication link between the external and internal auditors and the board; enhancing transparency of the district’s financial operations; and improving public trust in the honesty and integrity…

Friday, March 8 is a school day and classes will be held as normal. March 8 had been scheduled as a non-school day in one initial version of the 2018-19 school year calendar. However, that was quickly changed and March 8 is a normal school day. Students should report to class. This is not related to the inclement weather day that occurred on Friday, Feb. 22. The Board of School Trustees will vote to approve a make-up day for that canceled school day in a public meeting on March 14. If you have any questions, please contact your child’s school.

Over the weekend, 1,300 Clark County School District students from 16 schools participated in the USA Sevens Adopt-a-Country program. The program pairs the 16 teams and nations represented in the HSBC Sevens World Series tournament’s Las Vegas stop with a local school. The culmination of Adopt-a-Country comes when the students from the schools board a bus to attend matches at Sam Boyd Stadium to cheer for their team and watch world-class sevens rugby. Over the weekend, Lied STEM Academy staff participated in the St. Baldrick’s Foundation head-shaving event at McMullan’s Irish Pub to raise money for childhood cancer research. Three teachers (Aramis Bacallao, Kyle Murrell and Peter Newman), one support staff (Clayton Kendrick) and Principal Derek Fialkiewicz had their heads shaved off. Leading up to the event, school staff collected donations from students, parents, community members, friends and family. Whoever donated the most money would be able to shave the first swipe off of Principal Fialkiewicz’s head. A student donated the most with $200.
