UPDATE: The Clark County School District (CCSD) Board of School Trustees has canceled the work session previously scheduled for July 3. Trustees have scheduled a new work session for July 12.  A time and location for the work session is still being finalized as of this release. The CCSD Board of School Trustees will hold their next few regularly scheduled board meetings and work sessions at different locations. In light of recent national news involving immigration enforcement, the Clark County School District (CCSD) is reminding families that CCSD schools are safe places for undocumented students and their families, and that all children have a constitutional right to a public education. “Even though it is summer, we have students at schools participating in various programs and parents who are re-registering their students for next year. The eighth annual Reclaim Your Future Senior Celebration took place on May 10 at the Texas Station. The event, sponsored by the College of Southern Nevada (CSN) and the City of Las Vegas, celebrated the nearly 500 graduating JAG Seniors from 20 high schools. These students have faced tremendous adversity in their lives, yet put education first and will graduate on time. Nevada State College, CSN, Sands Cares, and the Bee-Lievers provided over $10,000 in surprise scholarships. Additionally, the Las Vegas Aces, the NBA Summer League, and Vegas Golden Knights Foundation also raffled off tickets and apparel throughout the event…

Clark County School District (CCSD) principals and school leaders recently heard from nationally recognized entrepreneur Sal Khan, the founder of Khan Academy, an education nonprofit whose mission is to provide a free, world-class education for anyone, anywhere. Khan shared his focus on leveling the playing field during a presentation at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. One of CCSD’s top priorities in the Focus: 2024 strategic plan is to increase equity and access to underserved and underrepresented students. The 2019 legislative session produced substantive, historic gains for public education. CCSD received a significant increase in funding from Gov. Steve Sisolak and legislative leaders in the 2019 legislative session. SB551 removes the scheduled reduction in the Modified Business Tax (payroll) over the upcoming biennium and appropriates that expected revenue toward school districts for school safety, plus a block grant for staff raises at school districts. Jara announced several key cabinet additions today: Mike Casey as CCSD’s new Chief Operating Officer and Christopher Bernier, Ed.D, as Chief of Staff. Additionally, current Chief of Staff Jennifer Cupid-McCoy will be moving back to Florida to be with family, and Chief Communications and Community Engagement Officer Kirsten Searer has accepted another position in education. Superintendent Dr. Jesus F. Jara provided an update to the Clark County School District (CCSD) Board of School Trustees on the recent decision to eliminate middle and high school dean positions, along with more central office positions. Dr. Jara stressed to Trustees he hopes to retain the approximately 170 deans by repositioning them into the classroom, helping to alleviate the teacher shortage. Deans will have the opportunity to be placed in an open administrative or teaching positions. Historic legislation was passed in the 2019 Legislature to modernize Nevada’s funding formula for the first time in more than 50 years. Nevada had the oldest funding formula in the nation. This update is crucial as we work to accelerate student achievement and move toward adequate funding throughout Nevada. While no legislation is perfect, SB543 addresses most of our concerns with the old Nevada Plan. This formula: Is more transparent about where the money goes.
