The CCSD Academic Support and Community Service Center provides free tutoring resources for elementary, middle, and high school students.
-
The center’s tutoring is provided by licensed CCSD educators in all core curriculum areas, including ACT/SAT prep.
Noteworthy: The center, which is adjacent to Advanced Technologies Academy, is the only one of its kind in CCSD that reaches students in all grade levels.
-
The tutoring hours are 2:30-5:30 p.m., Monday through Friday.
The big picture: Paris Hill, the center’s coordinator, said schools are the primary educators of students, but the center helps bridge that gap for kids throughout CCSD who might need additional assistance.
“In math, for example, we know that practice leads to better habits. At the end of the day, we’re leading them down the path to success,” Hill said.
What they’re saying: High school junior Mirricole Greenwood says the center has helped build her math skills, mentioning it also helps students in a wide range of subjects. “‘I think it’s really important to come here,” Greenwood said.
By the numbers: Last school year, over 500 students from 56 schools took advantage of the tutoring offered by the center, Hill said.
-
The center partners with Three Square to provide meals, ensuring students have the support they need, Hill said.
The backstory: Hill noted that the inspiration for the center, which became a reality over 25 years ago, came from longtime CCSD educator and former School Board Trustee Shirley Barber.
-
Barber envisioned a free tutoring space for families who couldn’t afford extra help, Hill said.
