Liliam Lujan Hickey was an outstanding member of the Hispanic community. She always had the desire to serve her community and promoted educational programs throughout Nevada.
Hickey was born in Havana, Cuba in 1932. In 1964 her husband had the opportunity to work in a casino in the fast-expanding City of Las Vegas, so they made the big move.
Hickey established Career Day for high school students, which, over the years, awarded over $300,000 in scholarships to Hispanic students. She was also one of the cofounders of the Classroom on Wheels, a program that facilitates educational, medical, and dental services to preschool children. Hickey was also the co-founder, past president, and board member of the Latin Chamber of Commerce.
She has been recognized with numerous awards, including the Outstanding Hispanic Award and the Women of Achievement in Government and Politics award by the Las Vegas Chamber of Commerce.
She is considered a champion in education for all that she has contributed to Hispanic youth, making it possible for them to receive an education.
Her legacy will always be remembered with the opening of Liliam Lujan Hickey Elementary School in 2006.
