In a unique and inspiring meeting of generations, students from the Las Vegas Academy Jazz Ensemble had the honor of interviewing legendary musician Joe Torres. Known as the “Godfather of Latin Jazz,” Torres has left an indelible mark on the world of music, working with icons such as Celia Cruz, Elvis Presley, and Nat King Cole. At 92 years young, Torres’s passion for music remains as vibrant as ever, and his story continues to inspire a new generation of musicians.
The interview, conducted by talented students Reyli Hernandez and Miguel Fonseca Lagos, shed light on Torres’s journey through the world of Latin jazz, his experiences with some of the greatest names in music, and his profound advice for young, aspiring musicians. Torres recalled his journey from his breakthrough album Latino Con Soul to his time performing in movies with Elvis, including Viva Las Vegas. Reflecting on his career, Torres emphasized the importance of dedication, advising students to “learn your instrument and listen to the masters.”
This inspiring exchange was made possible through a collaboration involving Vegas PBS and Latino Public Broadcasting’s VOCES documentary, Mambo Legends: The Music Never Ends, which aims to keep the legacy of Latin jazz alive for future generations. The film celebrates the enduring power of Latin jazz and its cultural significance, and this interview between Torres and the LVA students highlights how impactful it is for young musicians to learn directly from the masters.
The students were also excited to perform Torres’s piece “Soulcha,” a tune filled with the essence of Latin jazz. Seeing the connection between an experienced jazz icon and budding musicians was a reminder of how music transcends time, inspiring people of all ages. This interview not only offered students insight into Latin jazz history but also underscored the importance of preserving cultural legacies for future generations.
