Operation School Bell: Empowering CCSD Students Through Clothing Support
When students worry about their clothes, it can be hard to concentrate on education. Operation School Bell helps with this issue. It’s a program by the Assistance League of Las Vegas. They provide new clothing to students in need. Since 1978, the program has impacted students in the Clark County School District (CCSD). It ensures they can focus on what really matters—learning.
Upon arrival, students are warmly welcomed and guided through a fun and personal shopping experience. From colorful clothes to backpacks, students get to select the items that reflect their own style, boosting their self-esteem and confidence. As one volunteer mentioned, “Kids get to pick out their style, their colors, and it builds on their self-confidence.” It’s more than just clothes—it’s about giving students a sense of pride and empowerment that can carry over into their schoolwork and beyond.
One particularly moving story is that of Assistance League member volunteer Deborah Gandy, a former Operation School Bell recipient. Following a house fire that left her family in need, Deborah was taken shopping through the program for new clothes, an experience she remembers vividly. Today, she volunteers to help other CCSD students and offers them this message of hope: “This is all just temporary. You get to make your own future.”
Operation School Bell actively makes a difference by ensuring CCSD students have one less worry as they pursue their education. If you know a student who needs these services, make requests through CCSD schools. To learn more, visit the Assistance League of Las Vegas’s website at assistanceleague.org/las-vegas.
