In this edition of Community Connection, CCSD Board of School Trustees Clerk Lisa Guzmán explores the value of research-based instruction for educators and students.

Teachers utilize professional development so they can provide the most up-to-date instruction for their students.

  • So you may have heard about teachers going to reading institutes or math forums over last summer. UNLV, for example, offered educators an opportunity to get a master’s degree in English Language Learning.

Recently, thanks to federal Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief funding, CCSD was able to purchase instructional materials that are needed for Tier 1 instruction, the most up-to-date, research-based instruction.

  • This is a great resource for our educators and will assist struggling students.

What is important to remember is that our educators have been starved of these resources for years due to the underfunding of education. We know that as School Board trustees, who have approved these resources for educators, the fruits of this labor will reveal itself over the next three to five years.

  • Research says that for a child to learn a new language it takes three years for them to understand non-academic language and five years to understand academic language.

As a community, we know that our kids are excelling and catching up faster than expected after the COVID-19 shutdown.

I am excited about these resources because, with them, our kids will be back to where they should be.

I know children will be receiving the education that their parents expected when they signed them up to be students in the Clark County School District.
